Inventory in Ashtabula, OHThe way the financial folks look at inventory has changed dramatically since I entered the workforce and may very well change again in the not too distant future. That is why it is important to think about an Inventory Strategy.

Years ago, inventory was looked at as an asset and was a measure of the value of a company. Those were the days of long lead times, truckload shipments or at least LTL (Less than truckload) quantities. Distributors and retailers had to depend on inventory to supply their customers.

That thinking all changed when UPS, Fedex, DHL and others made smaller, more frequent shipments economical. It was further promoted by retailers and distributors who realized that by forcing the manufacturers to supply smaller quantities more frequently saved them a pile of money. That is when inventory turned into a liability.
